Krista Aversano and her team at
the Taj Mahound Bakery in Decatur, Ga., wanted to create treats of
all shapes and sizes. So they learned to make their own cookie
cutters. It's just the way things work at this popular suburban
Atlanta spot: There's always a solution when it comes to making
customers happy. Aversano, who started baking treats for her own four dogs from her apartment, began the business in 2004 by selling noshes to local shops. Then three years ago she moved to her storefront, where all items are baked on premises. The bakery's most popular flavor, 'pea-mutt' butter (peanut butter, honey and whole wheat flour), is found in everything from cookies to cakes, and ice creams like banana-vanilla and pea-mutt butter carob chip offer relief in the warm-weather months. Though treats are obviously intended for dogs, humans seem to enjoy stealing a snack every once in a while, too. Last year, anchors from CBS Atlanta tucked into cupcakes on air, and Aversano says she has one customer who regularly stops by for treats — because her husband loves them so much. They're also sold to local wedding and garden shops, too. Regardless of who's eating them, the treats are definitely making lots of mouths happy. So much so, that Aversano hopes to host an ice cream social at Taj Mahound this summer, and the door is always open for dog owners looking to throw a party. She'll bring the cake! |
